The Story of Crazy Love Africa

Crazy Love Africa was born from a family’s love story that grew into a global mission.

After adopting four children from Ethiopia and Uganda who had been orphaned by AIDS, Jess and Ben Wiederholt saw the strength — and the struggles — of mothers living with HIV. They realized HIV itself wasn’t what was taking so many young women’s lives, but the stigma, poverty, and hopelessness that surrounded it.

Determined to make a difference, Jess began learning about micro-business grants and the power of women’s cooperatives. In 2014, Crazy Love Africa began as a small act of love to support a few mothers and help their children stay connected to their birth villages.

That small beginning has grown into a vibrant movement empowering women and transforming communities across Uganda. Today, Crazy Love Africa provides safe cooperatives, skills training, and small business opportunities that help women build sustainable futures and lead change where they live.

At its heart, Crazy Love Africa believes in this simple truth:
When women thrive, families and communities rise with them.

Through Crazy Love Africa, Jess partners with women, youth, and families in Uganda while continuing to advocate for justice and dignity within her own community. The Impact of HIV

HIV remains a major health challenge in Uganda. Recent surveys estimate adult prevalence (ages 15–49) at about 5.1 %. Uganda AIDS Commission+1

Women continue to bear a greater burden — in the 2020 UPHIA survey, 7.2 % of women were living with HIV, compared to 4.3 % of men. PHIA Project

While HIV is not curable, it is manageable. With daily antiretroviral treatment (ART), people living with HIV can live long, healthy lives.

HIV transmission occurs in only three ways:

  1. Unprotected sex
  2. Sharing needles
  3. From mother to child (during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding)

Thanks to improved treatment and care, a person whose viral load is effectively suppressed (i.e. undetectable) cannot transmit HIV. This principle is known as U = U — Undetectable = Untransmittable.

RESTORE, EMPOWER, STRENGTHEN

Crazy Love Africa is a nonprofit organization founded in 2014 with a simple belief: women deserve our effort, attention, respect, and love.

We empower women in Uganda to follow their dreams and use their unique gifts to create sustainable livelihoods. Through micro-business grants, training, and community support, our Crazy Love Africa sisters have launched sewing shops, small livestock farms, dairies, and businesses selling groceries, firewood, used clothing, shoes, and traditional foods.

Together, we are building a future where women lead with confidence — and entire communities thrive.
